The Kuari Pass Trek ,often referred to as the Lord Curzon Trek, is among the most picturesque Himalayan trekking routes in Uttarakhand. At an elevation of around 3,817 m (12,516 feet), this moderate trek is a great option for novices and experienced travelers looking for stunning mountain views without the risks of extreme high-altitude routes. The trek is about 30 kilometers long and takes you through oak and rhododendron forests, wide alpine meadows, snowy mountains, and ridges. Along the way, you’ll see amazing views of famous Garhwal Himalayan peaks like Mt. Nanda Devi, Mt. Dronagiri, Mt. Chaukhamba, Mt. Neelkanth, and Hathi-Ghoda. Kuari Pass stands out because of the changing landscapes you’ll see as you go. In winter, the trek becomes a beautiful world of snow and ice. During spring and autumn, you get clear mountain views and colorful alpine scenery. Walking through the Nanda Devi region, across the grasslands of Gurson Bugyal, and ending in Auli makes this trek truly unforgettable.

Why Choose the Kuari Pass Trek?

The Kuari Pass Trek offers a mix of moderate hiking, interesting history, and beautiful Himalayan scenery, making it a trip to remember. The well-kept trek lets you explore different forests, wide alpine meadows, and mountain ridges with great views.

1. The Nanda Devi Balcony

One of the best parts of the Kuari Pass Trek is the amazing Himalayan views, often called the “Nanda Devi Balcony.” Unlike many Himalayan treks where you see peaks from far away in deep valleys, Kuari Pass lets you walk along high ridges with wide, open views of the mountains all around.
A Close View of Nanda Devi: From the higher ridges, Mt. Nanda Devi (7,816 m) stands out on the horizon. Its two huge peaks and the surrounding walls of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary make for one of the most stunning mountain views in the Garhwal Himalayas.
Panoramic Himalayan Views: The views go far beyond Nanda Devi. You can spot the pyramid-shaped Mt. Neelkanth, the big Chaukhamba range, Mt. Dronagiri, and the eye-catching Hathi-Ghoda peak. Each ridge gives you a new look at Dronagiri and the nearby mountains.

2. The Historic Lord Curzon Trek

Kuari Pass is not just an easy trek. It’s also part of the rich history of exploring the Himalayas. The trek got its name, the Lord Curzon Trek, after Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of British India, visited in 1905. Before trekking became popular, shepherds, local people, and traders used these mountain passes.
A Historic Trade Route: Local herders and merchants once used the Kuari Pass area to travel between Joshimath and Ghat. They carried goods like wool, salt, and medicinal plants along these mountain paths. The Kuari Pass trek lets you see a landscape shaped by many years of travel, local customs, and Garhwali traditions.

3. Gurson Bugyal - The High-Altitude Meadow

Gurson Bugyal, a beautiful high-altitude meadow, is another highlight of the Kuari Pass trek.At about 3,300 meters (10,000 feet), this large alpine meadow looks very different from the nearby forests and peaks. Its open spaces give you clear views of the Himalayan mountains.
A Meadow That Changes With the Seasons: In summer, Gurson Bugyal turns into a green field covered with alpine flowers. In winter, it becomes a wide stretch of white snow.
A Feeling of Freedom: The wide, open views at Gurson Bugyal give you a strong feeling of peace and freedom. Walking across the meadow with the Himalayas around you is one of the best parts of the Kuari Pass Trek.

4. The Enchanting “Narnia” Forests

The Kuari Pass trek also goes through beautiful temperate forests filled with old deodar, rhododendron, and oak trees. Trekkers often call these thick woods the “Narnia Forests” because they feel magical, especially in the cold winter months.

Wildlife & Wilderness:

This peaceful forest is also home to Himalayan wildlife. If you’re lucky, you might spot animals and birds like the Himalayan Monal and the Himalayan Musk Deer while walking through these quiet parts of the trek.
