The Hampta Trek Hampta Pass Trek, located at an altitude of around 14,100 feet (4,270 meters), is one of the most breathtaking trekking routes within the Indian Himalayas. What sets this trek apart is its dramatic change in landscape, which occurs over only several days. Trekkers begin in Kullu Valley, which boasts dense forests, alpine meadows, and wildflowers that bloom seasonally, adorning its paths. After ascending Hampta Pass and increasing elevation, however, the scenery changes significantly: green valleys give way to rugged Lahaul mountains with barren cliffs featuring dramatic rock formations, and high-altitude desert landscapes dominate the horizon. Hampta Pass is the pinnacle of your trek, a moment to remember. On one side is an eye-opening view of lush Kullu Valley. At the same time, the other opens into breathtaking, dry Lahaul - providing stunning evidence of the Himalayan rainshadow effect that gives the impression that one has crossed from one world into another! Hampta Pass offers more than just breathtaking landscapes; it is a trail that spans meadows, forests, stream beds, boulders, snowfields, and glacial terrain before ending at high-altitude mountain passes. Hikers may experience thrilling snowsliding along the trail depending on season and conditions - adding another dimension of thrill-seeking fun. Chatru and Chandratal Lake, better known as Moon Lake, represent an extraordinary Himalayan journey through some of Himachal Pradesh's most breathtaking landscapes.

Why Is the Hampta Pass Trek So Special?

1. The Spectacular Himalayan Crossover

The biggest attraction of the Hampta Pass Trek is its remarkable landscape crossover. Hampta Pass stands at approximately 14,100 feet and marks an astonishing change in geography. Looking in from Kullu, you can observe lush alpine meadows and a drier mountain ecosystem, while looking towards Lahaul, you see spectacular dry, desert-like terrain. The impact of Himalayan rain shadowing can explain this difference. When moisture-rich monsoon clouds move from Tibet into the Lahaul valley during the monsoon season, their presence creates an incredible contrast between the two valleys. Few hikes offer such dramatic terrain transitions over just a few miles as this one through the Himalayan wilderness to barren mountain ranges covered with rock and snow, beneath clear skies. Hikers who cross Hampta Pass will find this crossing more than simply breathtaking; it marks an unforgettable part of their experience of this mountain pass.

2. An Exciting and Fun Adventure Trek

Hampta Pass offers an exciting Himalayan trekking adventure without requiring technical mountaineering skills. As you trek along the trail, you'll come across: Discover icy mountain streams like Rani Nallah. Take a stroll across snowfields and seasonal glaciers; trekking guides will ensure that your adventure remains on course. Experience breathtaking snowy slopes of the Lahaul side of the mountain in early summer and make unforgettable memories. Every day brings its own set of challenges that make your journey both rewarding and exhilarating!

3. Access the High Himalayas Quickly

Hampta Pass offers unmatched accessibility compared with other Himalayan hikes that require long trips into remote regions to reach the trailhead. This trek begins from Jobra, approximately one hour from Manali. The journey is short; from Manali (6,700 feet), climb to Jobra (10,000 feet). As soon as you arrive at Jobra, you enter mountain wilderness almost instantly, allowing more time for exploring stunning landscapes than driving!

4. Explore Living History and Himalayan Culture

Hampta Pass has long been used as a vital trade route, connecting important settlements. Gaddi and Gujjar shepherds still guide thousands of goats and sheep through the Pir Panjal range each season in search of pasture. Trekking through these pastoral villages allows visitors to gain an exclusive insight into an age-old lifestyle which has changed little. This path is also steeped in legend. Places like Panduropa may have played an integral part in the exiled Pandavas' lives, while local folklore associates mountains with Yudhishthira's final journey into heaven.

5. Incredible Stargazing at Shea Goru

Shea Goru is one of the most picturesque campsites on this trek and a must for astronomers. Campsite located in a serene glacial valley along the Himalayas rain shadow region with clear skies, low humidity, and little or no light pollution. You'll have ample chances to photograph the stars; in clear evenings, t the Milky Way provides amazing photo ops!

An Outstanding Visit to Chandratal Lake

Your journey concludes with an unforgettable visit to the mesmerizing Chandratal or Moon Lake located at approximately 14,100 feet (4,267 meters). Chandratal Lake's crescent-shaped design is famed for its clear waters that range in hue from shades of blue, green, and turquoise - depending on the time of day! Surrounded by mountains that make up the Chandra Bhaga Range, Chandratal provides a spectacular endpoint to your trek. Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance. Hampta Lake not only represents natural beauty but is also a place of peace and calmness - the perfect reward after crossing Hampta Pass on your Himalayan journey! Standing by its serene waters feels like standing beside one of nature's true masterpieces.

Day 1: Drive from Manali (6,720 ft.) to Jobra (9,100 ft.) & trek from Jobra (9,100 ft.) to Chika (10,100 ft.) (Base Camp)

Trek Distance ~3 km (1 hrs)
🚗 Drive Distance ~19 km (1 hrs)
🧗 Altitude 3,700 ft
🍴 Meals Snacks & Dinner
🏠 Stay At chika campsite
🟢 Mountain Expert Advice: If you have motion sickness problem make sure to take medication prior to the drive starts.

Basic Details for the Day :The Himadri Treks adventure begins with an enjoyable drive from Manali to Jobra, the trek's starting point. The entire day is two hours of high-altitude driving that takes you from 6,720 ft up to Jobra, at 9,100 ft, followed by an easy 2km walk up to Chika, at about 10,100 ft. The journey up to Chika typically takes about 2 to 3 hours and is intended to be an easy start to the trek. While you will gain some elevation at the beginning of the day, the hiking section is relatively easy to walk, making it an excellent time to warm up as you adjust to the altitude.

Route Description & Terrain

  • Begin with a gentle uphill walk through silver birch (Bhojpatra), pine, and Himalayan forests. After about 20 minutes, the trail opens into a wide, scenic valley.
  • Walk across a mix of dirt paths, meadows, and small river stones.
  • Follow the right bank of the Rani Nallah as you gradually gain altitude.
  • The trail is easy and non-technical, making it ideal for warming up and settling into your trekking pace.
  • Use this section to check your gear and get comfortable with the Himalayan terrain.

Natural & Scenic Highlights :The landscape transforms beautifully when you ascend. The journey starts in the forest of Manali, surrounded by huge Deodars and pines, then gradually moves through regions where maples and Himalayan birches become more prominent. The Bhojpatra, or Himalayan birch, has a prominent role in Indian history, since its bark was traditionally used for writing materials in ancient manuscripts. After you emerge into the woods, the landscape is awe-inspiringly open. It is a stunning view. Rani Nallah can be observed winding its way through the valley. Meanwhile, the surrounding mountains begin to reveal the harsh lines that define the Pir Panjal range. A wide, V-shaped valley to the left will give you the first view of the landscapes at high altitude to be found in the days to come.

Local Culture & Himalayan Life :It also provides insight into the typical way of life of the Gaddi shepherds from Himachal Pradesh. They have always transported their animals between pastures to find fresh grass. Along the way, there are small temporary shelters, locally known as Dharis. These basic structures, usually built with low-lying stone walls and covered with aluminum or plastic sheets, serve as temporary shelters for shepherds and their families during seasonal journeys. There are also some areas in the Panduropa region where you will find folklore about the Pandavas. A few patches of lush greenery along the riverbed enhance the region's natural and historical character.

Safety & Acclimatization

  • The first night at 10,000 ft is crucial for acclimatization to altitude.
  • Stay well hydrated and follow your Himadri Treks guide’s instructions.
  • Maintain a steady walking pace with controlled breathing.
  • Practice deep, controlled breathing during easy trail sections.
  • Avoid sleeping immediately after reaching Chika; stay upright and move around the campsite.
  • Follow the trek leader’s rest and acclimatization schedule carefully.

Experience on the Trail :The road trip from Manali towards Jobra itself is an unforgettable experience, filled with turns and switchbacks through the mountains that reveal stunning views of the surrounding terrain. When you arrive at Jobra and walk out to Jobra, the change in the air quality of the mountains is evident immediately. Fresh pine scent, along with the refreshing breeze and serene environment, creates an amazing first impression of the hike. The hike to Chika can be described as stepping into an expansive Himalayan wildness. The path gradually transforms to meadows, and the river flows along as towering mountains surround the valley. The campsite is reached just before sunset, offering you the chance to sit by the river, take in the peace and tranquility, and watch the changing light across the mountain ranges. It's a great way to get accustomed to the Himalayan hiking experience.

Chika Campsite & Logistics :Chika campsite is situated near where tiny streams and the Rani Nallah meet. It is a flat campsite surrounded by grasslands, making for a pleasant spot to enjoy your first night camping in the upper mountains. Natural surroundings make for an ideal camping setting, and the nearby water source makes the area practical. Your trekking team will oversee water extraction and purification in accordance with the trek's security guidelines. Once you have reached Chika, the trek guide is required to conduct an initial check of your pulse oximeter to determine your baseline oxygen saturation. The information you collect can help you monitor your acclimatization during your trek.

Trek Leader's Advice

  • Be sure to keep the sunglasses and sunblock readily accessible. UV radiation is significantly higher at higher altitudes, even when the sky is cloudy.
  • Set your trekking poles to the proper level before beginning your hike.
  • Place your flashlight in a conveniently accessible compartment instead of tucking it away in your bag.
  • Keep your water bottle in a place where you can easily reach it and keep it hydrated regularly.
  • Begin walking at a leisurely, steady pace rather than striving to walk too fast. Be prepared with warm clothing, as temperatures will drop quickly as the sun fades behind the clouds.

Day 2: Trek from Chika (10,100 ft.) to Balu Ka Ghera (11,800 ft.)

🥾 Trek Distance8 km
🧗 Altitude Gain1,700 ft
🍴 MealsBreakfast, Lunch, Evening Snacks & Dinner
⛺ StayAt Balu Ka Ghera campsite
🟢 Mountain expert-advice Advice: Water Source: You will find water streams on the way, so refill your thermoflask there.

Trail Overview: The trek today covers around 8.5 kilometers and can take around 7 to 7.5 hours. Beginning at Chika around 3,100 metres and gradually ascending until Balu Ka Ghera at around 3,600 metres, climbing approximately 500m in elevation. The path has a gradual moderate grade. As you get closer to Balu Ka Ghera, the air feels a bit less dense, so keeping a steady pace and allowing the body to adjust to the elevation are essential.

Highlights

  • Take your way along the Rani Nallah as the trail continues to its left bank.
  • The hike begins with a gradual ascent into the boulder-filled, rocky sections of the valley's upper reaches.
  • Explore the vast Jwara Meadows, with open Himalayan landscapes.
  • Be prepared for river crossings in which the glacial waters can be exceptionally cold and rapid-flowing.
  • The trail continues to an unusual alluvial sand-silt deposit formed over centuries by glacial activity.
  • Keep heading toward Balu Ka Ghera, a natural, protected camping site located beneath the pass.

Local Culture & Gaddi Shepherds :The route passes through an ancient Gaddi area of shepherds. This region provides an opportunity to experience the simple but durable lifestyle of nomadic people. On the way, there are Dharis — small, circular stone shelters traditionally used by shepherds for protection for themselves and their animals during the seasons of migration. The shepherds in the area have remarkable skills in mountain climbing and extensive experience navigating difficult terrain and river crossings. The title Balu Ka Ghera is a reference to "circle of sand" and refers to the distinct beach that surrounds the campsite.

Trek Experience

  • This is the time of day when the landscape takes on the feel of the Himalayan mountains.
  • Crossing the river adds an exciting element to the experience, as the scenery changes the further you travel into the Himalayan mountains. After crossing the river and continuing through the wide valley, Balu Ka Ghera feels like an isolated Himalayan refuge.
  • The campsite is surrounded by the area's wildflowers, dramatic cliffs, glaciers, and snow-covered mountains; it is a stunning place to unwind after a hard day of hiking.
  • Always follow your trek leader

Balu Ka Ghera Campsite & Logistics

  • Balu Ka Ghera sits inside a naturally protected bowl-shaped landform and is surrounded by rocks. The camping area is mostly sandy, with a smooth surface.
  • Due to the elevation, temperatures fluctuate quickly. When the sun goes behind the surrounding peaks and temperatures drop quickly, staying comfortable is vital.
  • The Himadri Treks support team manages camping logistics with care, including ensuring that drinking and cooking water is sourced from nearby streams that are suitable, rather than directly relying on the main silty glacial flow.

Trek Leaders Advise

  • Bring shoes or sturdy floating shoes to cross the river.
  • Be sure to avoid crossing rivers in your main boots when trekking to protect your feet from prolonged wetness and cold-related injury.
  • Make sure you wear a broad-brimmed hat or sun protection, since UV radiation is extremely high at altitudes.
  • Put an extra down jacket and a woollen cap in your daypack, rather than in your main backpack.
  • Dress warmly when you arrive at the camping area, especially at sunset. Stay hydrated and maintain your pace throughout the day.

Day 3: Trek from Balu Ka Ghera (11,800 ft.) to Hampta Pass (14,100 ft.) then to Shea Goru (12,900 ft.)

🥾 Trek Distance7 km
🧗 Altitude Gain1,100 ft → 11,250 ft
🍴 MealsBreakfast, Lunch, Evening Snacks & Dinner
⛺ StayAt Shea Goru campsite
🟢 Mountain Expert Advice: Water Source: En route you will find water streams so refill there.

Trail Overview: Today will be the most demanding but also the most rewarding day of the hike. The trek covers about 7km and can take 8 to 9 hours to finish. It will begin around 11,800 feet, climbing to the top of Hampta Pass at around 14,100 feet before descending into Shea Goru at about 12,900 feet. The total elevation gain is about 2,300 feet, with much of the climb completed in the first couple of hours. A good start time is vital, since conditions around Hampta Pass can change rapidly, with clouds and snowfall usually appearing later in the day.

Scenic Highlights

  • The top of Hampta Pass offers one of the most breathtaking perspectives of the whole hike.
  • At the summit, it is possible to witness the magnificent Crossover effect — the lush green hills of Kullu on one hand transition abruptly into the dry, rugged mountain ranges of Lahaul and Spiti.
  • There are also stunning panoramic views of the high Deo Tibba and Indrasan mountains. In the descent into Lahaul, the landscape is more barren, revealing an impressive, moon-like expanse dotted with rocky forms and very minimal vegetation.

Safety & Acclimatization

  • Continue to maintain a moderate, steady speed all the way up.
  • Do not be apprehensive about sudden flashes of activity, particularly around 14,000 feet.
  • Contact you, Himadri Treks' trek director, immediately if you notice a severe headache, dizziness, difficulty maintaining your balance, or confusion.
  • When you descend, keep your knees slightly bent to minimize strain and impact.
  • If you must glissade, follow your trek guide's instructions carefully and use your feet to control your speed.
  • Secure your backpack straps and ensure your gear is properly adjusted before beginning the descent.

Shea Goru Campsite : Shea Goru is one of the most picturesque campsites along the trek. It is situated in a secluded valley bordered by a crystal-clear glacial river. It generally receives less rainfall because it lies outside the Himalayan rain shadow. This can often lead to clear skies. However, the strong winds may make the camp feel very cold, particularly at sunset. The camping area is the flat, grassy terrain and is surrounded by the rugged mountains. The temperature can dip below freezing late at night. Warm attire is necessary.

Trek Leader's Advice

  • Use UV-protected sunglasses when you are in the snowy areas to shield your eyes from harsh light.
  • Keep an additional pair of wool socks in your bag for the day.
  • Have a high-carbohydrate breakfast before climbing.
  • Take quick energy snacks like dates, chocolate, nuts, and Energy bars.
  • Make sure your warm clothes are readily accessible, particularly for the climb and then arriving at Shea Goru.
  • Make sure you follow the directions in the Himadri Treks guide attentively when crossing the pass and snowy sections.

Day 4: Trek from Shea Goru (12,900 ft.) to Chatru (11,000 ft.) & then drive to Chandratal (14,100 ft.)

🥾 Trek Distance7 km
🚗 Drive Distance48 km
🧗 Altitude Loss1,900 ft
🍴 MealsEarly Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks & Dinner
⛺ StayAt Chatru campsite
🟢 Expert Advice: Wear sunglasses after sunrise — bright sun on fresh snow can cause snow blindness.

Summit Day: Today's adventure is a combination of a 7km hike and roughly 48 kilometres of driving. Trek: Shea Goru to Chatru, Time of Trek: Around 5 hours, Elevation: Descend from approximately 12,900 ft up to 11,000 ft, Drive from Chatru to Chandratal and return. Food: Breakfast at Shea Goru, lunch at Chatru, and dinner on the camping site. Once you have reached Chatru and eaten lunch, drive through rough mountain terrain to the breathtaking Chandratal Lake. After the trip, it is back to Chatru for the night.

Trail & Terrain

  • Descend from Shea Goru across the imposing desert-high-altitude terrain in Lahaul.
  • The trail runs along the Chandra River, traversing rocky sections, boulders, loose scree, and loose rock.
  • The scenery is expansive, with a rugged, dry landscape as the roaring river flows into the gorge below.
  • In Chatru, the trek section ends, and the trip continues by car.
  • The road to Chandratal is a journey along the rough mountain roads that cross the Chandra River. The Chandra River is crossed via temporary bridges, depending on weather and conditions.

Natural & Scenic Highlights: The scene changes dramatically when you move through the Chandra-Bhaga mountains, with immense, barren peaks rising from the valley like natural sculptures. The main attraction of the day has to be Chandratal Lake, a stunning crescent-shaped alpine lake set against rugged mountains and glaciers. Its blue-green waters shimmer beautifully against the surrounding mountains and the open Himalayan skies. The tranquil setting and the dramatic scenery make Chandratal one of the most unforgettable places to visit during the journey.

Chatru Campsite & Logistics: After visiting Chandratal, you'll return to Chatru to stay the night. Chatru is located close to the junction of roads linking Manali, Lahaul, and Spiti, making it a crucial base for tourists visiting the area. Chatru is located near the Chandra River. Chandra River generally has the most basic of facilities compared to the camps that are more remote earlier in the hike. Freshwater sources are available in the vicinity of the camp, while the trek crew manages the drinking water supply in accordance with security requirements.

Trek Leader Advise

  • The route from Chandratal may be rough. If you're susceptible to motion sickness, you should take the appropriate measures before driving.
  • Make sure you have a down jacket, a woolen cap, and warm layers in the car to be prepared for your return trip.
  • The temperature around Chandratal will drop quickly following sunset.
  • Be sure to avoid littering around the lake.

Day 5: Chatru to Manali - Trek Ends

🚗 Return DriveApprox. 60 km
⏱️ Drive Time4 - 6 hours
📉 Elevation LossApprox. 4,600 ft (11,000 ft to 6,720 ft)
🍴 MealsDelicious Breakfast at Chatru
🟢 Expert Advice: Plan your onward journey from Manali in advance — the drive back typically ends late in the evening.

Basic Details : Today marks the end of your Himadri Treks experience. There will be no hiking today, just a beautiful road trip of around 60 kilometers.

  • Distance: Approx. 60 km
  • Drive Time: 4-6 hours
  • Starting Elevation: 11,000 ft at Chatru
  • Ending Elevation: 6,720 ft at Manali
  • Elevation Loss: Approx. 4,600 ft
  • Have a delicious breakfast in Chatru before driving to Manali.

Route & Terrain

  • The route between Chatru through Gramphu traverses one of the toughest mountain roads in the region.
  • Look for narrow dirt tracks cut into mountain slopes.
  • The path includes several streams, locally referred to as pagal nullahs, that are crossed by glaciers.
  • From Gramphu, the road is smoother as you climb towards Rohtang Pass at around 13,050 feet.
  • The last stretch is a series of hairpin bends and winding mountain roads before descending toward Manali.

Scenic Highlights

Perhaps one of the most thrilling moments of driving is watching the scenery change from the barren, dry mountains of Lahaul to the lush green valleys surrounding Manali. After crossing Rohtang Pass, the scenery is transformed dramatically. You can see:

  • Green mountain slopes
  • Deodar as well as pine forest
  • The waterfalls cascading down the rocky cliffs.
  • The stunning Beas Valley
  • Panoramic view of the surrounding Himalayan mountains

Culture & Local Highlights

  • Rohtang Pass was once a bridge connecting the Lahaul region to the Kullu Valley, serving as an important link among diverse Himalayan cultures.
  • When you lower your elevation to the valley, you will notice a shift in architecture from plain-roofed stone homes or mud homes in high-altitude regions to the unique Kath-Kuni buildings with sloping roofs found around Kullu as well as Manali.
  • Dhabas along the roadside in Marhi finally offer a chance to enjoy the local cuisine and ambience.

Safety Tips

  • The rapid drop from 11,000 feet to Manali could cause an earache or a slight headache.
  • Either yawning, swallowing, or gum-chewing can help balance pressure in the ear.
  • Keep your seatbelt on and follow the driver's directions, especially when driving on rough roads.
  • The risk of landslides, fog, and sudden changes in road conditions at Rohtang should prompt the driver to maintain an appropriate speed.
  • If you suffer from motion sickness, be sure to take proper steps before driving.

Journey Experience : The return journey back to Manali can be described as a rewarding ending to the days spent in the Himalayan mountains. The barren landscape of Lahaul, as it gives way to green forests, waterfalls, and valleys, will be a memorable end to the section of the trek. The journey to Manali is also a source of satisfaction when you reflect on the trails and mountains you've walked through with Himadri Treks.

Trip Completion & Logistics

  • The trek will officially end when you reach Manali.
  • Check your equipment for any final issues and return all equipment that you have rented.
  • Say goodbye to your team of porters, cooks and the support group who helped you through the hike.
  • Drop-off is at an accessible central point in Manali.
  • Take the Trek Completion Certificate from the Himadri Treks Guide when it's included in the package.

Trek Leader Advise

  • Keep your cold jacket or a windbreaker readily accessible. Rohtang Pass can remain cold even when Manali is warm.
  • Be aware of motion sickness before you leave Chatru, should you need to.
  • Have a bottle of water or snacks on hand during your drive.
  • Tea stalls, dhabas and cafes along the way can be useful stopovers.
  • Be sure to have your camera near Gramphu, where waterfalls and glacial streams create stunning roadside panoramas.
